Wound Gaskets
Components:

Metallic
strip - holds the filler

Filler
- flows under pressure filling the imperfections and creating sealability
for the gasket.

Guide
ring-holds the filler and metallic strip in the proper position.
Materials used:
-
Metallic
strip - 0.006" thick, Stainless Steel 304, 304L, 316, and 316L.
'L' specifies low carbon content. Other materials are available
upon request.

Filler
types -
- Flexible graphite
- temperature depending on applications:
- Steam and hydrocarbons
- 1200° F.
- Oxygen service(if
sealing element is totally enclosed) 930°F
- Oxidizing services
- +600° F
- Gasket must
be enclosed.
- Oxidizing agents
are nitric acid and sulfuric acids, chromium, chlorine acids
and liquid alkaline metals.
- Fire safe.
- PTFE - higher chemical
resistance is required - 500°F maximum.
- MICA graphite -
asbestos replacement - 660° F maximum.
- Do not use in
refineries, chemical plants or any flamable media

Guide
ring - carbon steel and electro-plated, standard thickness 0.125"
(1/8")
- Inner ring - used
in high pressure applications to avoid over compression. Not
standard on spiral wounds gaskets. The inner ring is made of
the same type of materials as the guide ring.
