Spiral Wound Gaskets

Components:

  • Metallic strip - holds the filler
  • Filler - flows under pressure filling the imperfections and creating sealability for the gasket.
  • Guide ring-holds the filler and metallic strip in the proper position.

Materials used:

  • Metallic strip - 0.006" thick, Stainless Steel 304, 304L, 316, and 316L. 'L' specifies low carbon content. Other materials are available upon request.
  • Filler types -
    • Flexible graphite - temperature depending on applications:
      • Steam and hydrocarbons - 1200° F.
      • Oxygen service(if sealing element is totally enclosed) 930°F
      • Oxidizing services - +600° F
      • Gasket must be enclosed.
      • Oxidizing agents are nitric acid and sulfuric acids, chromium, chlorine acids and liquid alkaline metals.
      • Fire safe.
    • PTFE - higher chemical resistance is required - 500°F maximum.
    • MICA graphite - asbestos replacement - 660° F maximum.
      • Do not use in refineries, chemical plants or any flamable media
  • Guide ring - carbon steel and electro-plated, standard thickness 0.125" (1/8")
    • Inner ring - used in high pressure applications to avoid over compression. Not standard on spiral wounds gaskets. The inner ring is made of the same type of materials as the guide ring.
